I wish all Lord Krishna devotees a very Happy Janmashtami. This is a festival of fun and frolic which also teaches us that we should believe in god and should always fight against the wrong. In our town, we celebrate it by decorating lord krishna’s temple in our houses as well as the town’s main temple.

Lord Krishna is the greatest political leader in the world. He has divine power which he uses to serve people. The Geeta always talks about the truth of the world. Let us all together celebrate his birthday.

Krishna Janmashtami recipes

Janmashtami is a festival celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and joy. It creates a euphoric atmosphere all around. Since Lord Krishna was very fond of milk and milk products, so devotees make various dishes of milk to please the Lord.

Devotees observe to mark the day and break it at midnight after the birth of Lord Krishna. Certain people observe the day with waterless fast while others have fruits and milk.

Janmashtami is just round the corner. What better way to celebrate Kanha’s birthday than treating Him as well as your dear ones with His favourite sweets…

Makhane ki kheer

Makhaanas – 2 cups (roasted dry for 3-4 min and roughly crushed)
Milk – 6 cups
Kishmish (raisins) – 1 tbsp
Almonds – 1 tbsp (cut into thin long pieces)
Sugar – ¼ cup
A few green pistas – finely sliced
A few rose petals to garnish
1. Boil milk on low flame for 10-12 minutes. Add makhaanas , almonds, kishmish and boil for 10-12 minutes, till slightly thick.
2. Add sugar. Boil again on high flame, stirring for 10 minutes.
3. Cook till a think kheer like consistency is obtained.
4. Garnish with sliced green pistas and rose petals. Serve chilled.

Dhania Panjiri

Saboot dhania- 1 cup
Powdered sugar – ¼ cup
Chopped mixed nuts – ½ cup
Makhanas- ½ cup
Ghee or oil – 4 tbsp
Khopra (Coconut) grated- ½ cup
1. Dry roast saboot dhania seeds for 5 minutes on medium heat.
2. Dry roast the nuts in a small pan for 4-5 minutes on medium flame.
3. Heat 4 tbsp oil or ghee in a pan. Add makhana and cook while stirring for 5 minutes. Let makhana cool.
4. Churn is a mixer for 1-2 seconds.
5. Churn saboot dhania seeds to a fine powder in a mixer.
6. Add powdered sugar, roasted nuts, roasted makhanaa and roasted khopra (dried coconut). Mix well let it come to room temperature and serve.
Nariyal Magaz Prasaad

Sugar -2 cups
Dry coconut ( khopra ) thickly grated -1 cup
Magaz (melon seeds) – ½ cup
Water -1 cup
1. Dry roast khopra and magaz separately is a pan for 3-4 minutes on medium flame.
2. To make sugar syrup put sugar and water in a sauce pan cook for 10 minutes till slightly thick stirring continuously to get 2 thread syrup.
3. Add coconut and magaz and stir well for 3-4 minutes.
4. Spread mixture on to a well greased thali or a small baking tray. Let it cool cut into pieces and serve.

Shrikhand Recipe

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Ingredients :
1 kg. Curd (Put in a muslin cloth and hung for 2-3 hours)
1 tbsp warm milk
3/4 to 1 cup powdered sugar
2 tsp cardamom (elaichi) powder
A few saffron strands
Slivers of pistachios & almonds (optional)

Method of Preparation:
Mix saffron in milk and keep it aside. Take a bowl and put Curd, sugar, saffron mixture and cardamom. Mix all the ingredients well either manually or with the help of a blender. Garnish it with almonds and pistachios
