It was a proud moment for women of the city who put up a brave fight against chain-snatchers and robbers recently.
On Tuesday evening, they were felicitated for their extraordinary show of courage and presence of mind. Among those felicitated were three women, a student leader and several others.
Police officials feel that such felicitation will encourage more women to take on conmen and robbers and get them arrested. Laxmi Indira Aiyar, a resident of Sama Road was attacked by a 17-year-old boy in her flat on March 17. She hit him with a glass following which he got scared and fled. But, M S University (MSU) general secretary Smit Thakkur who is her neighbour followed the gang of three and caught hold of one of them. The remaining two were caught soon after.
Both Thakkur and Aiyar were honoured at Police Headquarters in Pratapnagar during Komi Ekta Volleyball Tournament organised by city police on Tuesday as a part of Swarnim Gujarat 2011 celebrations. Jyoti Agrawal, a resident of Race Course Road too showed exemplary courage when she caught hold of one of the chain-snatchers on Jetalpur Road on March 18.
Agrawal was driving her two-wheeler with her four-year-old daughter when two men riding on motorbike snatched her chain. She fell off the vehicle and got injured. But, she managed to get hold of one of the bikers who was later arrested by J P Road police station.
“The idea behind felicitating brave citizens, especially women, is to encourage them to help the police. If citizens are alert and courageous, incidents of chain snatching will come down sharply,” said a police official.
